Sports fans all over know John Elway. Even the most uninterested person has heard the name. An awesome football player who led his team to two Superbowl victories, before retiring at his peak. Fame is definitely his.
But how about the name Tim Tebow? Do as many people know him? Yeah, the name maybe rings a bell, associated with some epic failures. In fact, he also led the same team as Elway, as a starting quarterback...for a whole year. That fiasco led him to be traded, which eventually led him to leave the game altogether and wind up in baseball instead of football. A fall from grace some would say.
Not the way Tim and thousands of others see it though. This man has fallen so far from fame and straight into God's grace. Tim Tebow has had the doors flung wide open to preach the gospel, to be a firm example of Christ-like love, to be an influence on so many around him. This man is living a purpose-driven life. He is blessed by God to preach His gospel.
So here's the question. Why do we waste our lives looking for the world's approval, when God's approval is right before us? Why do we seek out fame in the eyes of others, when faith is what puts us directly in God's arms?
Jeremiah 9:23-24 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
I don't want to leave an earthly legacy. I want to lead people onto God's trajectory. We're not doing this for now. We're doing this for eternity. We're planting seeds so that generations will be blessed. We're not doing it for our own fame in the eyes of the world. We're doing it for the lasting effect that it will have in the world. I don't care about being famous to the world. I care about being faithful in God's eyes.
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
