God Speaks Sign Language

Three times yesterday, God spoke to me. It’s not in any audible voice, though I often wish it was. There is a number that, when I see it, I know that to be God catching my attention. It also is God showing me His provision and love to get my attention when he does a different sign. Over time I have come to recognize those signs as God speaking. To be honest, an audible voice, I might question. Did I really hear that? Was it just in my head? Was that your voice at all? But God does speak. He speaks every day and all day. We just have to tune our hearts to His frequency to hear him. Seeing is believing right? God is so practical! He knows we won’t always listen to an audible voice even though we think that’s what we need. This is why God speaks sign language.

Moses and the burning bush is one of my favorite instances of this.

Exodus 3:2-4

There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”And Moses said, “Here I am.”

There are so many of examples in the Bible. Abrahams ram in the thicket, Gideons fleece, or prophets who used the Urim and Thummim for confirmation of Gods will. Jesus did this so many times in his ministry, where he would show a sign before he spoke. He would feed the 5,000, walk on water, or raise someone from the dead and then He would speak. This is the way he actually proved himself to be God, showing the character of God. God would show signs, then God would speak, and Jesus did this also. Acts 2:22-41 talks about this as being the confirmation of Jesus being God. One thing is quite clear to me though. God wants to speak to us. But He often gives us signs to get our attention first. So if God is showing you His sign language, pay attention! He is speaking!

Recently, my family has been through crisis after crisis. The enemy has been attacking, but God has not relented in showing up and speaking in signs. His peace is fully over us and we are covered. As God speaks his sign language, He is speaking to our hearts and holding us in His hands.
