When God calls you to crazy faith

If God called you to something crazy, would you do it?

Every good Christian out there shout "Amen! Yes Lord, Yes!"

But we're not talking missions trip crazy. We're not talking putting more than your ten percent in the tithe box. We're not talking give up your Saturday to visit someone in prison. And yes, those are wonderful things and you should do all of them, but I'm talking about crazy faith here.

What is your answer when God says to stand for a marriage that is dead and over instead of moving on and marrying someone new? What about when He tells you to forgive someone who raped your sister or daughter? What if God tells you to divorce your spouse to allow them to suffer the consequences of their actions?

I absolutely believe that He did. The pharisees of this world might tell you differently. "God hates divorce." How many times has this verse been quoted and misquoted over the years?

God had called me for years to stand for my marriage. I fought hard in my prayer closet and on my knees. Finally, as it was falling apart, I cried out. I begged God to end the divorce. I was the one that filed, because God had called me to let my ex suffer the consequences of his actions. Still, I prayed and cried and begged God to not let it go through. Please God, change this mans heart of stone. Trade it for a heart of flesh. Fill him with your Spirit. And God told me no, that this needed to go through in order that His plans could be accomplished in both of our lives.

Suddenly, His word came to life for me.

Genesis 2:23-24 "The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.' That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh."

Matthew 18:8-9 "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell."

God spoke to me as He showed me these two verses. My husband and I were one flesh and we had entered into a sexual sin lifestyle that I had fought to get out of. He continued in that lifestyle, even after I had come to know the Lord. If God is my direction, sin was my husbands. Any time that I chose to follow him, I was walking in sin. My flesh, the man I had become one flesh with, was causing me to sin. God's word told me to cut it off and throw it away. To gouge it out and throw it away. He called me directly to divorce.

The church would disagree though with "God hate's divorce." I don't at all disagree with you that God hates divorce. I also hate divorce. It's horrible, terrible, painful. In my opinion, one of the worst things you could possibly go through. But God loves me. He loves me so much more then He loves marriage. Yes, God made marriage and it is a beautiful thing when it's led by the Lord. But God does not love marriage more then he loves me. Jesus didn't die on the cross for my marriage. He died on the cross for me. My life. The individual. When I stand before the Lord at the end of my days, I stand alone. Not with my spouse. Marriage is a blessing. It is not more important that the individual within the marriage.

I was in an unequally yolked marriage for years and God called me to stand and fight for years until finally, God called me to divorce. It is not going against his Word to follow after God's calling on your life. God is a living, breathing God, not a law book. It is going against our human interpretations of a divine word. The church doesn't always have it right. Continue to listen to God's promptings. He will give you the right answer for the next right step.

"God would never." Have you heard that too? My answer - Don't put God in a box. This book is not a LAW book, it's a principles book. It's about relationship with an unfathomable God. You can't place rules on God like "He would never" when He can, He is able to, and if you would soften your heart to His plans, He will.

I am not using this as an excuse to justify sin either. I am simply saying that the church is not the same thing as God. We need to listen to the church and our leaders and advisors, yes! Just like we need to pray and read our word! But we have to be careful about taking the advice of someone, even someone in the church, and interpreting that as God's word. Are you here to please people or to please God? The best advice I can give on how to hear God's voice is that if you hear Him and are unsure, pray about it and don't move immediately, but ask God to confirm it in His word. Then go home, open your Bible, and see what He says to you in that. And ask again and again for confirmations. It is not testing God to ask for a confirmation. It is testing your hearing and interpretation. Read His word! He always has the right answer for you. Yes, use the church. Go to friends and family that know the Lord that you trust! But don't go only to them. Go to God and His Word and don't mistake another persons interpretation for the truth either. He will reveal the truth to you as you grow closer in relationship to Him.
